As one of Boris Johnson’s first acts as London Mayor, he decided that to make public transport in London more safe through banning alcohol on the London Underground system, making it offence to be in possession of an open container of alcohol either on the trains or in the stations. What he didn’t count on was the final ‘goodbye’ that thousands of Londoners decided to take part in.
On the evening the ban was due to go into force at 12 midnight, people gathered in their hundreds in various tube stations around London, with a major number of people in Liverpool Street station. They were drinking and enjoying themselves, trying to show that not all people getting drunk are anti-social or cause trouble for others. However, it would seem that a few people had other ideas.
As the night wore on, with tube trains and stations full of people and police on the scene to keep the crowds under control, a few people had had one too many. Reports of arrests made by police went around, as some people were there not to enjoy the last night of being allowed to drink booze on the tube, but to get as drunk as possible as quick as possible, and continue the great British tradition of making an arse of yourself when intoxicated.
All in all, its a nice idea. The ban is probably for the best, but a gesture to say that it isn’t everyone causing the need for a ban in the first place, it went well. Its just a shame a few (as always) spoil it for the many.
Either way, alcohol on the London Tube is now banned. Now if only they could ban the businessmen in cars who absolutely MUST GET PAST YOU OR THEIR LIFE WILL CEASE TO EXIST. That would be good – and I bet there wouldn’t be a bloody goodbye party for them!
