Birds aren’t known for their rebellious nature really. Sure, you get magpies stealing anything shiny which isn’t nailed down (if it is they just nick the nail first) but that is more a case of them being a bit dim. Since when has a milk bottle top been good nesting material, anyway?

There are always exceptions though, as one shop owner found out to his considerable cost – £250,000 to be precise. Seems a little sparrow (I’m not sure of its air-speed velocity, or whether it can carry a coconut) managed to be responsible for the shop catching fire and being mostly gutted when it tried to use nesting material which it really shouldn’t have.

The insurance company seems to have been at a loss to explain the fire until a few weeks later when they found a stack of cigarette ends up in the roof of the building. Looks like our feathered friend thought they made good stuff for nests and neglected to think of the effects of a still-lit butt on the structural integrity of the shop. Those damn swallows, never thinking ahead…

It has not been mentioned whether or not the bird will face criminal charges or if it will make bail. It is a flight risk after all…

Yeah, I know.
