Birmingham, England. Its a rubbish place, really. Sure, it has its nice bits, but by and large it is just… boring. Featureless. Aside from that, it also has a city council who seem to not know their own city. Oh, and they enjoy a game of ’shoot yourself in the foot’ every now and then.
The occasion was celebrating the city’s efforts in recycling, the way they marked it was… contradictory, to say the least. They decided to print 720,000 leaflets and send them throughout the city – surely the best way to celebrate being eco-friendly and recycling would be to not send the leaflets out in the first place? Saves on all that paper, printing and transportation, that’s for sure… Anyway, what they didn’t quite realise was that whoever was chosen to put the picture of their glorious city on the leaflet didn’t know what it looked like.
As some of you Americans may know, there is also a city in the US called Birmingham, named after the UK city, and when they picked a picture for the pamphlet they decided to show the skyline of the US namesake instead of the British one. No biggy, right? Could just be a generic picture – which is what the council said first when their booboo was discovered by a single person (I bet he’s a laugh to be around).
However, they eventually decided to come clean and admit someone had cocked up. You know you live in a crap place when the people in charge couldn’t even recognise that a photo of their city wasn’t actually of their city.
See, Birmingham City Council, THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE. Proof that councils would find it very difficult to find their way out of a wet paper bag. Collectively.
