£61,000 – that is how much money this couple managed to get away with over a 3 month period from a broken cash machine in their area, and I bet they thought they would get away with it. Think again, suckers!

The machine was not recording transactions for accounts with unauthorised overdrafts and when they discovered this, they treated it like open season. She was an investment banker earning £40k a year but that didn’t stop her and her husband from taking out at least £300 every day for 88 days.

They spent the money on the usual: a fast car, house improvements and savings towards holidays and the like. They did keep £27,000 in cash in their house tough, which in retrospect probably wasn’t the safest move.

Did they really think that even if it wasn’t recording the transactions, they would get away with it? Surely they must have realised that the card would have recorded every time it was put in the ATM, and even if it hadn’t, it wouldn’t take much work with camera footage from the times the money was disappearing from the machine to work out who was making it disappear without a trace. Seems greed blinds even those who have a clue how the banking industry works.

So, next time you want to defraud a large financial enterprise, at least do it well. Idiots.
