This is the ultimate putdown: losing a mayoral election to a dead man, but it has happened in a village in Romania.
The incumbent mayor died recently, just days before an election was due to take place for his very position. As it was too close to the election to cancel or re-arrange it, they went ahead. What would be usual in this circumstance would be the living candidates to battle it out regardless, but not this time.
Firstly, there was only one opponent it would seem – and people don’t like him much. To show their disapproval, a good number of them voted for the dead man, giving him enough votes to actually keep him in the position of Mayor. Some protest!
Naturally, the opponent has asked for another election to be called, along with some people from the village. Still, the best quote has to be from one villager, “I know he died, but I don’t want change”. Hows that for idiotic comment of the year – things have already changed, unless you are blessed with the power of reanimating the dead!
