The French are known for their culinary expertise, chief among them their abilities as bakers. All the varieties of French bread you can imagine are now on sale in the UK, and damn tasty it is too. But it seems some French companies require more from their bakeries, something which only British bakers can provide, apparently.

A French catering company have established a contract with a British baker based in Barnsley to export 7,000 loaves of brioche every couple of months, for usage in croque monsieurs (basically a cheese and ham toastie). According to them, the problem with French bakers is they’re just too damn set in their ways – meaning their complaints that the bread went stale too quickly went unheeded. Apparently, British bakers are more flexible to that kind of thing (anything to steal business off a Frenchie?).

So, if you’re in France sometime soon and order a croque monsieur, you might just be eating a loaf of bread made in Barnsley, then shipped over to France. And they call us bad cooks!
