Yes, it is as bizarre as it sounds – two German kids tried to elope together from their homes to get married in Africa. Even more weird is that they also took an older sister with them to act as a witness for the ceremony!

They got the idea when Mika, six, returned from his family holiday in Italy to woo five-year-old Anna-Bell with tales of fun in the sun. They decided on New Year’s Eve that they should go and get married in Africa, packed their bags with plenty of swimwear, summer clothes, cuddly toys and so on, and set off with Mika’s 7 year old sister in tow as witness.

They reached the train station in Hanover by tram, where they planned on getting the train to the airport, before a policeman noticed them alone in the wee hours and decided that maybe something was up.
Fortunately for them, they ended up getting a guided tour of the police station (wow) before getting picked up by their parents who had been searching for the little blighters.

Ah, young love, how sweet… and sickly.
