Its not a light undertaking, donating a kidney, but it is usually one of those undoable things: when it’s done, it’s done, an end of story kind of thing. That hasn’t stopped one man who donated his kidney from demanding it be returned, or that he be given adequate compensation for it (about $1.5 million worth of compensation, to be precise). The thing is… Dr Richard Batista donated it to his wife, Dawnel.

Well, soon to be ex-wife, that is – you see, the couple are going through a messy divorce it would seem (which could get much more messy if he has his way). The two married in 1990 and in 2001 she needed the live-saving kidney donation. In 2005 she filed for divorce – so they seem to be going for the award for most elongated divorce proceedings ever as well.

He says its about the betrayal and disrespect he felt at the hands of his former woman, and it is the last thing he wanted to do. I’d go as far as to say it is also the weirdest. Its a kidney, not a pet dog to be passed from pillar to post, man. Anyway, her lawyers are disputing it and pointing this out, so lets watch this space to see where it goes. We could see the world’s first case of an internal organ to be handed over in a divorce settlement, you never know…
