Its a story to make you want to rifle through your possessions stashed away in your house, just in case. A man who was given a load of seemingly random objects by his grandfather, a rag-and-bone man, 60 years ago, has just found out exactly how lucky he was.

When he got a gold cup which had been sitting underneath his bed valuated, he got a mighty surprise. Recently it was sold at auction… for £50,000. The staggering amount he got for it is actually only half of what it was thought to be worth at auction (£100,000 was the estimate), but who could complain?

Among the other objects he had lying around were a Roman spoon made from gold which was sold for £5,000 and another gold ornament which fetched £1,000. So, all in all, he has just made £56,000 from a few bits of junk which he had never given much attention. Not bad, eh?

Now I’m off to see if I have any historical artifacts just lying around…
