Ah, how I love a good story about religion. Apparently some people in America are praying to God to give them lower fuel prices. They have been meeting up at a gas station in St. Louis, buying fuel, praying and then singing a rousing rendition of ‘We Shall Overcome’ with a change in lyrics to “we’ll have lower gas prices” (amazing turn of phrase, I know – they should be writing pop songs…).

The aim of it all, of course, is to lower gas prices. What is amusing is they claim it is working already – that prices have dropped slightly and so therefore God has been helping them out.

Now, I’m going to pick a couple of holes in this one. The chances of prices dropping anyway were 50% – or 33% if you count them staying the same as a possibility (which in this economic climate is probably impossible!). So, when the price of oil is dropping anyway after its recent price surge, they see a drop in gas prices as a direct sign that their prayers are working. Of course.

Of course this is entirely unprovable (like most things in religion) so it is pointless debating the point, but if God had wanted us to have cheaper transportation and so on, or to not ruin the planet, or whatever else he wants us to do/have/think, why didn’t he do it in the first place? A sea of oil covering the entire planet below the crust maybe? Making us all use cars which don’t actually need oil? I don’t know, but any idea of God intervening in his own master plan seems a bit… well, contradictory to the idea of a master plan.

But enough of that. If that works, then the world should be full of humankind’s every desire. Except for women. God hates women.
