Personalised reg plates are the plaything of the rich and pretentious as we all know, simply making it easier for everyone to realise you’re an idiot even before you decide to overtake on a narrow blind bend in the pouring rain at twice the speed limit.
However, some of them do fetch a nice amount of cash, but they pale into insignificance when compared to what a historical reg could get you – in this case, £397,500. This one was originally registered in 1903, back when the first registrations became available in the UK, and was owned by a Lord Justice Clerk in Scotland (he was also a Sir, dontchaknow). The reg itself – ‘S1′.
This still isn’t the most expensive reg plate to have been sold though – believe it or not, there are people out there with even MORE money and LESS sense. The prize for ‘biggest waste of cash’ goes to the bloke who paid £440,625 for the plate ‘F1′, no doubt to make him think he was driving a Formula One car. He was a car designer though, so he has some excuse.
What will this stupidly expensive plate end up on, I hear you cry? Well, none other than an old red Skoda which will be seen around the Midlands. Yes, that’s right. A plate worth more than a decent sized house on a car worth a few quid, in the arse-end of the country. Wonderful.
