Energie Cottbus – not a football team many of you will know, and hardly one challenging Barcelona for the Champions League title. No matter though – the German league is more than enough! Well, so people thought when they travelled nearly 400 miles to watch their favourite team play high-flying Schalke.
What the 600 or so travelling fans got though was a 4-0 drubbing, with their team on the receiving end. The Cottbus team are already on the brink of relegation and this will not have cheered their supporters’ spririts much at all. Even their own manager said the performance was ‘pitiful’.
So, in the end, those fans who paid to go and see a crap match have ended up being refunded by the team for the value of the ticket. Of course, that doesn’t help with travel costs, but it is a rare move nevertheless, especially for a club facing imminent financial strife through relegation.
If only that happened here in the UK. Newcastle United and Manchester City would be paying out every week…
