A German man who is selling chocolate Jesus figures has ended up the centre of a storm of controversy. It all stems from the fact that religious types in his area don’t like the idea of their Lord being cast in choccie form and wrapped in golden foil to be sold for the gobbling of all and sundry.
It could be the fact that he has called it ‘Sweet Lord’. It could also be that it is being sold alongside more traditional Easter confectionary, like chocolate bunnies and the like, with one church spokesman saying that it is “ruining the symbol of Jesus himself”. Well, I don’t know – it get him out there and seen, and gives him a reputation of being delicious and good for kids, which is a damn sight better than the image your average old priest conveys nowadays.
Still, the best quote has to come from the German Protestant Church who didn’t mince words when they said it was ‘tasteless’. I think they will find they are wrong – the Saviour has never been quite so tasty.
