South African scientists studying wildlife on an island near Antarctica were stunned by the sexual advances of a seal towards a penguin.

The 100lb young adult male seal dived on top of the poor 15lb penguin (also an adult male), then proceeded to pump away for 45 minutes before losing interest and ignoring his victim.

The scientists thought at first that it was an act of play, but as it wore on they realised that the seal was actually trying to have sex with the penguin – which they were filming at the time.

What makes it so weird isn’t just that the two animals involved were of different species, but also that they were of totally different animal groups too – the seal being a mammal, and the penguin being a bird of course. They have explained the incident by saying the seal was probably ‘frustrated and sexually inexperienced’ – I bet that makes the penguin feel a whole lot better!
