Japan, and a once-troubled train station has been saved from eventual closure by none other than a stray cat. The station had lost all of its staff as traveller numbers decreased ever lower, and was in danger of being closed down by Wakayama Electric Railway, the station’s operator.

The cat, who was born and raised at the station, didn’t leave when the final staff did. The train company decided to make her the station master in a move which garnered a fair amount of publicity in Japan, and ever since then the passenger numbers have steadily increased. Adding to this is a small level of merchandising being undertaken with children’s books and the like.

Passengers coming through the station often stop to have a photograph taken with Tama the cat, while she wears her little black station master’s hat. She enjoys the attention, apparently, and doesn’t mind people touching her as they pass through.

In a country steeped in superstition, and the belief that cats bring good luck, it is easy to see why Tama is such a hit with people and how she could be the saving grace of something as mundane as a railway station.
