A man is attempting to sue a property company in the USA after he bought an apartment and got far less than he bargained for. What makes this special though is that the Russian man who splashed the cash REALLY splashed the cash – $53.5 million in total – and all on a property he had only seen in an online video and had never been to visit in person.

He is claiming that because it wasn’t what he had expected (low ceilings and obstructed views, apparently, along with ‘ugly drainpipes’ – sorry, but aren’t all drainpipes ugly?) that he deserves his deposit back along with a massive award of damages. The desposit itself was $10.7 million, and he is asking for $30 million in damages.

I just can’t get my head around this one. I know there are plenty of people out there in the world with far more money than sense and that idiots exist at every level of life, but damnit, this guy is a total tool. Would YOU buy a house you hadn’t actually seen? Hell, most people wouldn’t even buy a car they hadn’t actually seen, so why this guy decide to burn over $50m on an apartment is beyond me.

There is apparently a precedent for this too – a man who bought a house after viewing it only through pictures on a website sued after he discovered upon his first arrival at his new pad that there was a nice big ditch in the back yard. He ultimately lost – so lets hope this precedent sticks and this money-crazy Russian loses his case for ‘breach of contract, deceptive trade practices, negligence and fraud’ (over-egging the pudding, somewhat).

All in all, I suspect this is just his lame attempt at saving face as the conversation with his lawyer would probably have gone something like this:

RUSKI: “This isn’t what I ordered! It didn’t mention all the bad parts of this place on that video! How dare they only show the best bits!”

LAWYER: “Erm… I believe that would be because they’re in real estate…”

RUSKI: “Don’t use your fancy technical terms on me, I don’t care! I want my money back!”

LAWYER: “OK… I don’t think that will happen.”

RUSKI: “What do you mean, it wont happen?! I demand compensation! Thirty million compensations!”

LAWYER: “Are you *really* sure you want to do this? I mean… it could show you in a bad light. Like, maybe, you didn’t actually check anything out before spending all that money.”

RUSKI: “Listen, I’m too busy to look at what I spend money on. Its not my job to look at things, I pay people to look for me! Now get on the phone and sue these bastards!”

Now lets just hope the idiot doesn’t get his money back, eh?
