An Aussie mayor has sparked a huge row when he dared to mention the word ‘ugly’ and ‘woman’ in the same sentence. He was merely saying that he thought that given his town’s huge disproportion between men and women (under 900 women in a town of nearly 21,000) that it would mean that any ‘beauty-disadvantaged’ women who came to Mount Isa would be valued more for their character than for their looks.
Which is completely allowable, if you ask me. Of course the politically correct brigade jumped on it, women complaining that someone dare make the insinuation that they aren’t all Amazonian princesses, men complaining that it made Australia look bad and so on. Yet he has had some support – from women who have experienced the ‘advantage’ he spoke of first-hand.
So what exactly is wrong in pointing out that in a place with few women, men wont be looking at looks straight away? I mean, for christs sake, the man didn’t even use the word ‘ugly’… It just reeks of yet another excuse to over-react to something which may point out that everyone isn’t bloody drop-dead gorgeous.
Bit like those American talk shows with the stupidly overweight people, while the crowd and host crow about them being a beautiful people that are just misunderstood – sorry, but its a load of crap just to make them feel better! And there is no such thing as ‘beautiful on the inside’ either – you may be an awesome character or whatever, but that doesn’t mean the same thing!
Gah. Rant over!
