The UK and France have a long history together. Usually that history involved killing each other, or on rare occasions joining up to kill someone else, but still its a history nontheless. This time they have managed to work together on a project – managing to crash submarines into each other. Except this didn’t happen in a port or something, this happened in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
Yes, two nations supposedly in full control of their faculties managed to slam two nuclear submarines into each other, claiming that it was “incredibly embarrassing” that it had happened. “But don’t they have sonar?” I hear you cry – yes they do, but they also have ‘anti-sonar’ which is being given part of the blame (in the best military finger-pointing tradition) due to it being “too effective”. The vessels involved are called the HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant.
So, essentially, two supposedly developed nations with dangerous nuclear submarines have made them so invisible that in some cases they can actually sail straight into someone else in an area over 76 million square kilometres large. Nice going, and brings all new meaning to ‘failboat’.
