It is a sad indictment of British society that we cannot import a traditional overseas dish and preserve it in it’s original format. Are we such a bunch of philistines that we have to simplify everything so it sounds and taste “British”? That appears to have happened with the news that Supermarkets have now started selling Sushi on a larger scale
Now supermarkets have been selling Sushi for years, but not in an entirely edible format, usually in a small dish, frozen solid and more often than not rather tasteless. It’s a bit like Oven chips, people know they don’t taste like real chips but people buy them all the same because know they will put up with the substandardness. It’s a British disease. And the same applies to Sushi, except this time, not content with making a poor imitation of the original, the supermarkets have modified the product to better suit our British ignorance. “Tuna mayonaise and sweetcorn Sushi” is one of the offerings, soon I fear Sushi will be as down market as Burberry clothing.
Now I am not saying that Sushi should be the reserve of the upper class losers and Islington trendy’s, but making it available to to multitude by sheer butchery you are doing a massive discredit to the real Sushi chefs who have made it such an elegant and popular dish?
