In a superb piece of damage limitation, the Vatican has finally broken its silence on the matter of extra-terrestrial life (aliens to you common sods). They say that aliens can exist without blowing a giant hole in their religious ideas – those aliens would of course have been created by our god too.

Another funny thing was they also reckon these aliens could be free from what is known as ‘original sin’ – the state all humans are supposedly born into due to the ‘Fall of Man’, like the Adam and Eve story (basically us disobeying God). Which is just bloody great for those aliens isn’t it!

Just wonder where this leaves their ‘God made us in his image’ theory, are they saying all aliens look like us or that God’s image was just (yet another) metaphor for something else. Incidentally, the man who has come out and said this is actually a scientist who works for the Vatican, so it seems like at least they’ve thought about this for a while.

However, its all a far cry from the last few centuries of Vatican posturing, including the condemnation of various scientists through the years who have later proved to be absolutely right (see Galileo when he said the Earth went round the Sun). Guess we’ll all see in the fullness of time how many other things they can back-track on!
