World record attempts are usually amusing. This is because nowadays most of the attempts are on rediculous records, like how many hours someone can go without sleep or eating as many hotdogs as possible in 10 minutes. However, the reason they’re amusing is not often down to the organisers or participants failing in a pretty big way.

Its exactly what happened in Croatia, as a few hundred people (395 to be precise) gathered to have a go at setting the new world record for Most Smurfs In One Place – oh yeah! This involved full make-up (erm… blue paint) and costume (erm… white sheets) and for them all to gather in one place. Which they did…

Their research before the event told them that the current record stood at 291, set by a group of Americans not so long ago. However, it turns out that their information was out of date: the record had been beaten last year by a bunch of students (typical) at Warwick University who managed to gather 451 Smurf-a-likes to clinch the world record.

So, when the Croat Smurf Squad found out they were not going to be taking the record, and that in fact they never were, they got a little dejected, understandably.

Perhaps the cruelest punishment was the fact that they could well have taken the record if they had actually properly researched the record currently standing. That and the Croatian media touting their success when in fact, it was all one big smurf-up.
