This story sounds like it was taken from the plot of a bad Leslie Nielsen film – you know the ones where a series of misunderstandings end up with him wearing no pants in front of the President and his wife, or destroying something important. The story involves an Indian politician…
Picture this. Afformentioned Indian politician V. S. Acharya, home minister for Karnataka state, is on his way to a political rally for his party. He is sitting there, relaxing, when he looks out of the car window. He sees a large group of people in the distance and asks his driver to take him closer to see what is going on.
Quickly, he realises that he is looking at another rally taking place. Thinking he can make a surprise appearance in front of his supporters and say a few words, he decides to stop and attend the rally.
He makes his way to the stage, where someone offers him a chair. He sits for a short while before standing to give his rousing speech to the masses. He goes on to speak about his party (the BJP) and how they have improved life in Karnataka under his guidance. He notices the crowd are a little stiff still, no doubt needing a bit of motivation, so he makes his next comment about their greatest opposition, the National Congress. He lambasts their failed policies and speaks his mind. Something is wrong though.
The crowd are growing restless. He isn’t getting the rousing support he expected from his critical words directed at the government. Then it dawns. He looks around at the flags, the banners and the badges. Quickly glancing around him, he can definitely tell something is amiss. He isn’t at a rally for the BJP. It’s for the Congress.
Knowing that this almighty guffaw will be headline news the next day, he beats a hasty retreat. He dives into his car (maybe even through an open car window) and is taken away to his proper rally. Meanwhile, all the Congress supporters stand around wondering what the hell just happened along with realising why they didn’t vote for him last time round.
The best bit is that he was only offered a chair because he is a relatively high-ranking individual and it was a matter of courtesy extended to him. He went on to claim he ‘dropped in’ as a ‘matter of courtesy’. Apparently he also dangles his soft fleshy bits in front of starving lions…
Oh, and to cap off the silly season for BJP politicians, a female leader in their ranks caused groans all round when she protested the existance of a law relating to illegal immigration and promised to lead a march to have it overturned. Except it already was overturned. 4 years ago. Ah well, points for effort maybe?
