Anti-terrorism laws are stupid as we all know – thinly veiled attempts to allow the police to do what they want when they want without common law standing in the way. But their stupidity was highlighted when police stopped a family with a disabled child on their way to Calais by ferry for a day trip – claiming that the parents were smuggling their own child, using anti-terrorism laws to detain them in the process.
The police officer (a woman) apparently stopped them, asked “who’s the boy?” and then ordered her cronies to surround the vehicle they were in. The child in question was mixed race, and has cerebral palsy along with autism, and when the mother asked if she would had been stopped if he was white, got a response of “are you calling me a racist?” from the officer.
The mother was then separated from the rest of her family and taken in for questioning, where she was told by the oh-so-knowledgable police woman “it’s obvious the child has nothing to do with you”. Well, thankyou for your insight you utter pillock – I would hate to see her involved in a murder investigation!
Eventually they were released, and cue the inevitable police response of “wah wah wah hard job blah blah blah” and admitting that the police woman in question acted like an utter idiot. She’s now been re-assigned, doubtless to mess up some other avenue of life for everyone else. The family have been compensated for the experience, but I don’t feel it is enough.
Really, this boils down to police officers being so bored that they’re willing to dive on anything to lighten up their day. Firstly, why the hell would they be trafficking a child from the UK? Especially one who is obviously unable to cope without his parents close by – surely, whatever a trafficker would have planned is hard to do with a mentally disabled kid. Secondly, for the police woman to make such blatant accusations without a shred of evidence is utter crap. If I walked up to someone in the street and started accusing them of things in the same manner, I bet I would be arrested and probably end up in court over it. But because it is a police officer, they’re above the law and escape any real punishment.
Ain’t life grand?
